On Rereading this Classic 50 Years Later
By John Mccarthy
I first read this book 50 years ago and then took from it one basic idea that has guided my reading ever since...That one idea was that every good non-fiction book deserves 3 readings. The purpose of the first rapid read is to get an overview of the general thrust or central thesis of the book. The second reading involves digging in, an attempt to understand and analyze the author's central argument or thesis, and the third reading is for the purpose of argument, i.e., of reflecting on where we agree with the book and where we disagree, and why...

50 years after that first reading, i still try to follow the advice (above), and find it as helpful and true today as it was back then.

So, what in particular did I gain in from my current reading of this fine book, this gem? Three or four things, all of which are, at least to me, important.

First, re the value of reading the intro or the preface in which the author often says specifically and explicitly what his central thesis is.

Second, re the value of reading the last chapter or even the very last 8 to 10 paragraphs in which the author may, once again, summarize the whole central purpose and argument of the book, which gives you a key to understanding the work in its entirety.

And, third, don't begin arguing with a book until you are certain that you have understood it as well as you possibly can.

Bottom-line, I'm happy that I went back to reread this fine book.

The best reference book you can have!!!!
By A Customer
Now in my last year of law school, I found myself extremely angry upon completing this book. How invaluable this book would have been if I had read it before reading the hundreds of books that were assigned to me in high school, college, and law school. Why didn't anybody tell me about this marvelous gem?!! But the good news is that I have my entire life ahead of me, and I will begin putting this book to use right away.
Anybody who hasn't bought this book yet, stop reading and buy it NOW!
Anybody who knows somebody about to enter high school, college, or graduate school, or who is serious about education and the pursuit of knowledge in general, buy this book for them NOW and they will be forever grateful!!

A promise kept
By Jennifer Hoins
Adler does exactly what he promises in the title. He tells you how to read a book. I read this book for a high school rhetoric class and though we read it in three weeks, I was so impacted by it that I have tried to apply his many suggestions.
He covers reading very thoroughly. Ideally, when we read a book, we first grasp what the author is saying (the who's and what's), then what he means, then how that relates to our life. These three steps fit into the first three levels of reading. The first asks 'What is the book saying?,' the second 'What type of book is it?,' and the third 'What does the book mean?.' There is another level which basically is a topical study- reading books to find what various authors say about a given topic.
Adler recognizes that we often don't get much from a book because we don't know how to read well. (He covers the relationship between reader and writer and their responsibilities toward each other)So for each level he gives rules and suggestions for how to read on that level. Often these are in the form of questions to ask that book.
Another thing Adler recognizes is that not all books are equal. Many books only need to be read on the first level, some on the second, and a few on the third. This also affects how fast one reads. The speed should match the difficulty, importance, and quality of the reading- even within the same book.
In addition to covering the four reading levels, Adler takes different types of books and gives specific applications of his suggestions to these books. You would not ask the same questions of a history book that you would of a play.
Oh and Adler provides exercises and a very good reading list to get you started on the road to good reading.
So Adler is very thorough and logical in his presentation and the reading is very enjoyable. His style is easy to understand and interesting at the same time. He covers some other topics here and there like reading education and the great books. This is an excellent book for both students (life long learners included) and those who just want to learn and enjoy books more.

Court-Martial: How Military Justice Has Shaped America from the Revolution to 9/11 and Beyond, by Chris Bray

A timely, provocative account of how military justice has shaped American society since the nation’s beginnings.

Historian and former soldier Chris Bray tells the sweeping story of military justice from the earliest days of the republic to contemporary arguments over using military courts to try foreign terrorists or soldiers accused of sexual assault. Stretching from the American Revolution to 9/11, Court-Martial recounts the stories of famous American court-martials, including those involving President Andrew Jackson, General William Tecumseh Sherman, Lieutenant Jackie Robinson, and Private Eddie Slovik. Bray explores how encounters of freed slaves with the military justice system during the Civil War anticipated the civil rights movement, and he explains how the Uniform Code of Military Justice came about after World War II.

With a great eye for narrative, Bray hones in on the human elements of these stories, from Revolutionary-era militiamen demanding the right to participate in political speech as citizens, to black soldiers risking their lives during the Civil War to demand fair pay, to the struggles over the court-martial of Lieutenant William Calley and the events of My Lai during the Vietnam War. Throughout, Bray presents readers with these unvarnished voices and his own perceptive commentary.

Military justice may be separate from civilian justice, but it is thoroughly entwined with American society. As Bray reminds us, the history of American military justice is inextricably the history of America, and Court-Martial powerfully documents the many ways that the separate justice system of the armed forces has served as a proxy for America’s ongoing arguments over equality, privacy, discrimination, security, and liberty.

Review
"Don't be scared away from a topic that you fear would be as dry as a bowl of shredded wheat. Bray's book has a cogency that will floor those in the justice field, written with verve and immediacy that will captivate the novice. A brilliant read that entertains as well as illuminates." (Joseph D'Alessandris, Leatherneck)

“[Chris] Bray, a former sergeant turned military historian, helps put the lie to the idea that law is a recent arrival on the battlefield. He rightly sees law as a weapon that has powerfully shaped the way America has fought its wars, from the Revolution to the present day.” (John Fabian Witt - Wall Street Journal)

“[An] impressively researched, well-written, and thoroughly entertaining account of military justice in U.S. history. . . . What one repeatedly sees in Court-Martial is a military justice system which, for all its shortcomings, has played an integral role in helping America discover its best self.” (Mike Fischer - Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel)

“An absorbing chronicle of American justice, short of legalese, that will provide grist for discussion in both civilian and military contexts.” (Library Journal, starred review)

“In his first book, a former infantry sergeant-turned-historian surveys more than 200 years of the administration of American military justice. . . . A thoroughly impressive debut.” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)

“Bray, a historian and former U.S. Army infantry sergeant, explores a neglected aspect of American legal and social history . . . in this persuasive study of the relationship of military courts-martial to broader social questions.” (Publishers Weekly)

“With a sharp eye and a dry wit, Chris Bray gives us a page-turning tour of court-martial cases that reveal the fundamental questions, values, and debates that have shaped American history. A fantastic book.” (Lorien L. Foote, author of The Gentlemen and the Roughs)

“Chris Bray has written a fascinating book about the role of military justice in American history. Drawing on his experience as a soldier and his training as a historian, Bray offers a lively and compelling account of how military decisions have shaped American law and life from the Founding Era to the War on Terror. This is a story that every American should know and understand.”” (Jonathan W. White, author of Emancipation, the Union Army, and the Reelection of Abraham Lincoln)

From the Author
This book tells big, dramatic stories about the history of the American military. You'll read about the gun battle between black soldiers and white police officers in Houston during World War I, and the mass trials and hurried group execution that followed. You'll get the story of the captured Sioux warriors who were tried by a military commission during the Civil War, men on trial for their lives who didn't speak English and didn't know they were on trial -- until after they were sentenced to death for killing unprotected settlers. And you'll learn about the desperation of the Modoc warriors who ambushed unarmed American soldiers who had come to negotiate with them, another event that led to a flawed trial and the hurried construction of shared gallows.

These are just a few examples of the events I describe. My goal with this book was to ground serious history and a careful exploration of ideas with real storytelling. I put events and people in the foreground.

Alongside stories of the way military courts addressed military conflicts and served the political purposes of the armed forces, you'll read about the way that larger social and political conflicts reached into the world of the armed forces and changed the way military discipline worked.

During the first half of the nineteenth century, for example, flogging was a centerpiece of the way the U.S. Navy disciplined ordinary sailors. When Congress banned naval flogging in 1850, their decision reflected an entirely unrelated controversy: Abolitionists took up brutal navy punishments as a way of attacking slavery, drawing a connection between forms of harsh physical coercion. When Congress voted, the roll call in both houses broke down along sectional lines: Northerners mostly voted to ban naval flogging, while Southerners -- offended by the presence of abolitionists in the debate -- voted against the ban. The American debate over slavery changed the way the navy could discipline its personnel at sea.

For another example, consider dueling. The Articles of War forbade both dueling and a range of associated offenses -- like serving as a second, or challenging another soldier to duel. During the Civil War, the War Department in the North issued regulations expanding the meaning of a "duel" to mean any challenge to fight between any soldiers, including privates.

But the gentlemen officers who served on courts-martial refused to consider a challenge between privates to be part of a "duel." They arrived believing that only gentlemen could actually duel, and only if they went through the correct ritual forms like the appointment of a second. Mere privates and sergeants, not being gentlemen, couldn't challenge each other to duel -- they could only challenge each other to fight to the death, which didn't count. They acquitted defendants who were charged with dueling but lacked the necessary social status to actually participate in the social ritual of the duel, and it didn't matter that War Department regulations said something different. Social knowledge trumped legal regulations.

These are the kinds of stories you'll read in this book. I hope you'll enjoy them, and I hope you'll find some American history that will be new to you. Thanks for reading.

Push your jaw back up and keep reading
By Hafharhrhr Amalmahay
Wow. How has no one covered this unbelievably rich vein of US history like this before? In example after astonishing example, Chris Bray writes of a parallel American universe few people today probably have much of an inkling of. As popular and pervasive as is the criminal justice system in popular television and crime books, just as obscure, mystifyingly, has been military justice. Well it's high time to lift the veil. It's a fun, if often deadly serious, ride. And if you think military justice is just about the military, well think again.

First of all we have a wonderfully enlightening account of just what a militia meant from the colonial era - how basically all citizens were expected to be soldiers at a moment's notice. So in the beginning, military justice was not something that could just happen to professional soldiers - it was something of genuine concern to everyone who might inadvertently get caught up in its snare. Being an American meant potentially being a soldier, and if you needed reminding of that, imagine as a private citizen getting hauled up in front of a court-martial, and it would be something you would not forget again. If you ever wondered why we discarded the militia system in favor of a standing army, well, this books makes it painfully obvious.

Throughout the first half probably the most incredible thing is just how messy and haphazard was the application of "justice" in the army and navy. Justice in fact was pretty much beside the point, secondary to other considerations, like winning wars, maintaining discipline, complicated notions of social honor, political expediency, nepotism, and the sheer testosterone of military commanders. Justice happened, if at all, around the edges and through the cracks of courts-martial, as the command structure, the officers, and the enlisted found other ways of meting it out with hazing, social shuns, blatant disregard for orders. The author presents this complex social fabric and the myriad cross-purposes with wonderful sympathy and clarity, and a healthy dose of ironic grins at all the absurd contradictions. "Like watching a man trying to run in two directions at once." Or how about this one: "It was an age of - We're going to war, if anyone wants to jump in." He really seems to relish the messy absurdity of it all, and the sentiment is contagious. I mean, how can you help but laugh at the account of august personages like Thomas Hart Benton and Col. John C. Fremont getting into a courtroom battle of staredowns and dirty looks, only to have it closely followed and analyzed in the nation's press? Terrific stuff.

High comedy, yet deadly serious. Over and over we see how military trials have been used for whatever goal their powerful prosecutors had personally set themselves, for motives high and low. From petty commanders to overreaching colonels, generals to Presidents - the temptations to declare emergency powers and overrule civilian law in order to use the far more loosely defined and malleable military codes has been set loose throughout history. Scary, sobering, yes, but what's even more fascinating are the ways individuals and civilian institutions managed to push back.

Yet through it all the message gets hammered home: the military reflected and often presaged upheavals in American life, oftentimes years or decades ahead of the rest of society. Jackie Robinson resigned his commission in disgust from the military, having successfully beaten a charge related to his refusal to give up a seat on an army base bus to a white person. This about 20 before Rosa Parks was celebrated for a similar civilian episode. Who knew? Under the more intense pressure and strain of armed service and wartime, things can come to a head in acute ways. It's like American society at large, but in a pressure cooker.

What really comes home is how the military, it's laws, it's unwritten codes of honor and social understandings, are woven into the fabric of American life and history in such a surprising and relevant way. And our current debate on the use of tribunals and the questions of treating non-combatants as soldiers, well this could hardly be more relevant, and to understand the huge pitfalls this entails, well, there is no better understanding to be had of that other than this book. I've read history but not been a big military history fan. This might be changing.

Terribly important, and wonderfully well written.

Great New Angle on US History - New Facts, New Perspectives - READ THIS BOOK
By Tim Rohde
I just finished this book. I couldn't put it down. It's FASCINATING.

The author really knows how to bring history to life. It's a gripping read about people in conflict. That's part of what makes it great. But an even larger part is that Chris Bray, the author, really knows how to communicating the essence of the American experience through these stories.

And it's EXCELLENT original scholarship from primary sources many of which nobody touched since they were stored away! US history buffs, there are FACTS in this book that you never read before. And stories that are just plain gripping.

This book is about government and individual power in a system where government is "of the people, by the people and for the people." Our country started without a standing army. Armed citizens, organized into militias, WERE the military. Because of this, the history of the court martial is the history of how we define our relationship to power - ON ALL SIDES OF THOSE POWER RELATIONSHIP. The early part of this book is the BEST ILLUSTRATION I'VE EVER READ of the unique aspects of American individual rights and limited government.

It also displays changes in our reliance on social norms and reason vs laws, rules and procedures.

Because we have a citizen military even to this day, military justice deals with all of the many issues of class, race, gender, gender-preference, citizen's rights, government's rights, etc. But it's military justice, so it comes at everything from an entirely new angle than you typically read in history.

This book is like a whole new mirror on America placed at a different angle than anything that has come before.

I can't say enough good things about it. Buy it and read every word. And be prepared to expand your perspective on American history.

Quitter is a book about how it’s possible not only to survive but actually thrive in the tension between a day job and a daydream. With the wit and insight gained in a dozen years of cubicle living, Acuff shows us all why we don’t have to become the “I’m, but” generation. I’m a teacher, but I want to be an artist. I’m a project manager, but I want to start my own business. If you’ve ever sat in a cubicle and thought, I don’t want to do this job for the rest of my life, this book is for you.

Quitter will entertain, enlighten and challenge you to commit yourself to Mondays Of Joy instead of looking forward to the weekend so you can finally live.

Tim Sanders New York Times Bestselling author of Today We Are Rich, former Yahoo! executive and a quitter --daveramsey.com

There are friends (I might be one of them) who will tell you, "Quit your job and follow your dream." But Jon Acuff is smarter than that. Quitter is about going from cubicle-bound to Outward Bound without committing financial and marital hara-kiri along the way - and actually succeeding in the end. This book is wise, personal, funny and loaded with practical, real-world insights from Mr. Acuff's own ongoing odyssey. If you're torn between living your dream and putting food on the table for the wife and kids, don't make a move till you read Quitter.

I feel like a jerk telling you to read this book. I loved reading it but hated the implications. Jon Acuff cuts right through all the crappy excuses that we put between us and our dreams. This book haunts me a month after I finished it. I can't fritter away time on the internet anymore with a clear conscience. I wake up earlier so I can take time to write and focus my thoughts for the day. I find myself trying harder and doing more work at work. It sucks. I miss my life as a slacker.

Acuff writes from his own experiences not in a show off way but in a clever way that gives him credibility. I laughed and cried a little, but in a cool way, not an overly emotional wreck kind of way. Acuff is ridiculously likable which is probably best for him because if I didn't like him, I might try to kick him in the shins for suggesting that a work ethic in your current job will help you prepare for your future dream job.

If you're taking time to read this review, you obviously have time to read something more substantial like a book. Go ahead and buy Quitter. Read it yourself. Give it to your whiny friends who can't figure out why they're not living their dreams. Call your brother or sister and read it to them over the phone. Give it to your kid in the basement who thinks it's normal to live with parents 10 years after graduating from college. You could also do what I did and give this book away with a break up note to your boyfriend, gently implying the relationship is doomed because he won't put away the X Box and become a grownup. So yeah, buy Quitter once, buy it twice, buy an entire case of books. I know you know people who should read it. My guess is you might be one of them, too.

Okay read, but...
By Steph
I feel like I know Jon Acuff better after reading this book, but feel no closer to closing the gap between my dream job and my day job. Insights, but nothing revelatory. As someone who has considered alternatives to my day job for longer than a few hours, each of the ideas presented in this book has already crossed my mind. I also felt like the book was geared toward someone whose "dream" was similar to Jon's -- blogging, writing, creating a brand. If that's not what you dream of doing, I'd find another book to read.

Don't be deceived by the reviews...it's not that good!
By David Johansen
I was really disappointed in this book. Like most, I picked it up based on Dave Ramsey's recommendation as I'm a big fan of his. I went into it thinking that Jon Acuff must be some well-respected, established motivational speaker type like a Stephen Covey, and that this was all of his best advice after years of counseling people about their careers and having gone through the process himself many years before. In reality, Acuff has worked in various jobs over the past 10 years or so (that he complains endlessly about in the book without providing any substantive reasons for not liking them) and then started working for Dave Ramsey literally *right* before writing this book. The book basically says that Acuff was hired by Dave as a speaker/author and suggests that his very first assignment (or one of his first assignments) was to write this book about leaving your day job and starting your your dream job. So Acuff's dream job is basically writing a book about finding your dream job. This is problematic for several reasons, not the least of which are (i) he doesn't have any particularly great insights into making big career moves or any extended experience in this area--he just happened to get hired a month or two before by Dave Ramsey and (ii) very few people can relate to the dream of being a public speaker/motivational author, and even for those who can he doesn't really tell you anything practical for landing a job like that (instead focusing telling you not to quit your current job and lecturing you about not spending time at your current job thinking about your dream job).

The book actually started out with some good and useful information in the first chapter or two. Unlike others, I didn't really mind Acuff's personal stories--I thought they were the most interesting part. What it lacks is substance. Once he gets past the personal stories, there just really isn't much too the book, and all of the filler that he puts in there is entirely unhelpful--I would just find it very wandering and repetitive. I don't blame Acuff as he is just doing the job that Dave assigned him. I also don't blame Dave for recommending the book endlessly--he's just being a capitalist plugging the book that he published and his employee wrote. I guess I blame myself for not looking into the book further. I saw that it had so many five star reviews so I figured it had to be good, but as I was reading it I found it really quite baffling because I thought there was just no way that that many people could find this book to be so great. What I later realized was that a very large chunk of these are from "the Quitter 100" -- that is, the 100 people whom Acuff had read this book before it was published. He thanks them in the book, and if you look through the reviews here on Amazon you will see that a huge chunk of the five star reviews mention that they were given pre-release copies or seem to know Jon personally or at least avidly follow his blog. At least many of them had the courtesy to disclose that they were given advanced copies, but my guess is that if you were to take out all of these reviews the real star rating on here would be noticeably lower.

I'm sure Acuff is a nice guy, and I actually like his writing style and might check out his blog, but I would recommend not being fooled by the reviews on here and not spending your money and time on this one.

These skills provide children with the resilience they need to approach the teenage years and adulthood with confidence. Over the last thirty years the self-esteem movement has infiltrated American homes and classrooms with the credo that supplying positive feedback, regardless of the quality of performance, will make children feel better about themselves. But in this era of raising our children to feel good, the hard truth is that they have never been more depressed. As Dr. Seligman writes in this provocative new book, "Our children are experiencing pessimism, sadness, and passivity on

From Publishers Weekly
According to noted psychologist Seligman (Learned Optimism), 30% of American children suffer from depression. Further, his studies demonstrate that "pessimistic children are at much higher risk for becoming depressed than optimistic children." His mission here is to teach parents and other concerned adults how to instill in children a sense of optimism and personal mastery. Seligman discounts prevalent theory that children who are encouraged by others to feel good about themselves will do well. Instead, he proposes that self-esteem comes from mastering challenges, overcoming frustration and experiencing individual achievement. In clear, concise prose peppered with anecdotes, dialogues, cartoons and exercises, Seligman offers a concrete plan of action based on techniques of self-evaluation and social interaction. He describes the development of the Penn Depression Prevention Program, in which school kids are taught ways to divest themselves of pessimistic approaches and adopt optimistic ones, and adapts it to home use by parents. While a few of the exercises may seem daunting to parents, this encouraging volume moves beyond popular self-help tomes and ideology to offer hope and practical suggestions; it will be of great value to teachers as well. Review
This title is unique in its scope and content: depression-proofing a child through helping them challenge pessimistic thoughts. This isn't just a pop concept: Seligman has studied depression for three decades and his program is based on a long-term research project. -- Midwest Book Review

Maybe it's Mistitled, but it's GREAT
By Kathleen Day
I don't disagree entirely with the one-star reviewer--optimism is hardly the answer to all of society's problems. However, as the parent of a son who often shows signs of inheriting ... depression ..., I found this book to be a proactive alternative to the little lectures on over-reacting to situations that I had been giving! I explain the steps Seligman suggests as games we play to prepare him for middle school and they get him thinking about the control he can exert in his own perceptions (this is a skill often not acquired until late adolescence, if ever). Finally, some support for at-risk kids! I only wish more parents were aware of the influence their behavior wields--this book helps both parent and child increase self-understanding. Other books on childhood depression depend too heavily on explaining available medication--THANK YOU, Mr. Seligman, for offering concrete advice on drug-free depression-prevention.

Optimism-an Emotional Intelligence Competency That Works
By Susan Dunn
I'm an Emotional Intelligence coach. I work with adults teaching them EQ competencies, including optimism, and I've seen it work wonders! Since reading this book, I've been teaching it to children with the same results. It's particularly important in children with high IQs. Their propensity to perceive more deeply, and their perfectionism made them set-up for depression. They can get into trouble with their thinking (can't we all!). Seligman's theory works, if you take the time to understand it and follow his instructions. The essence of optimism is not the upward cycle, but being able to avoid the downward spiral when a disappointment, loss or failure occurs. It's a way of thinking that can be changed. Would you like to live 19% longer, enjoy better health, be more likely to fulfill your potential ... all this backed by Seligman's years of research ... and wouldn't you want this for your child?

Effective in helping middle school parents and children
By Jorge Munoz-Bustamante, LCSW
I am a 6th grade counselor in a private school. After reading this book I used it to prepare a workshop and to help several families abandon child management systems that were highly stressful and unproductive. The workshop got very high ratings and requests for follow ups. Several families reported a significant improvement in their quality of life following interventions based on Dr. Seligman's ideas.

I believe that Dr. Seligman has good intentions when he applies this book to depression but that this emphasis limits the book's potential. It has much broader value and can help almost any family improve the middle school and teen years experience. I am looking forward to helping many more members of our community with the use of this tool.

If you are having difficulty with the 11 to 15 year old developmental process or you just simply want to look at some really good ideas this is a book for you. It is an easy read and well detailed. Enjoy!

From Publishers Weekly
Twenty-five years after the publication of the bestselling Getting to Yes, Ury addresses the other side of the coin, but his version of "No" is not a simple rejection. "A Positive No begins with Yes and ends with Yes," he says, because it defines the nay-sayer's self-interests and paves the way for a continued relationship. Ury delineates this "Yes! No. Yes?" pattern recursively, so that each step is itself another three-part process. In addition to drawing on his own experiences as a negotiator for conflicts in countries like Chechnya and Venezuela, and the historical examples of activists like Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi, he shows how his principles can be used in the home and the workplace. He even throws in a few literary precedents, citing Melville's Bartleby the Scrivener, whose repetition of the phrase "I would prefer not to" is cited as a "simple and admirable" method of polite refusal. Some of Ury's advice, like describing how another's actions make you feel rather than attacking the action, may strike the more cynical minded as touchy-feely, but his reminders to consider the other person's perspective while asserting your own position create a clear, unambiguous path to win-win situations. Review
"William Ury brings a marvelous blend of experience, insight, integrity and warmth to his work. In this wonderful book he teaches us how to say No—with grace and effect—so that we might create even better Yes".—Jim Collins, author Good to Great

"Almost any brief comment on The Power of a Positive No would be trite. Suffice it to say that if I'd had and used this book for the last 25 years, I would have doubtless avoided innumerable heartaches and headaches and tattered personal and professional relationships. 'Original' is an embarrassingly overused word on book dust jackets, but, simply, this all-important book stands alone on a subject that underpins, like no other, jndividual and organizational effectiveness."—Tom Peters, author of In search of Excellence

"The world's biggest shared secret is that most of us say yes when we really want to say no, in both our professional and private lives. Bill Ury generously provides us with insights and techniques to turn this malady into win-win solutions. This is a wise and powerful book."—John Naisbitt, author of Megatrends

"No matter whether you are negotiating compensation with the toughest CFO or a curfew for your teenager, this book teaches us a critical and counterintuitive lesson.  You can say no and still be nice.  Simple, straightforward and easy to read, The Power of a Positive No is a YES on our reading list."—Linda Kaplan Thaler and Robin Koval, authors of The Power of Nice: How to Conquer the Business World with Kindness

Root your No in a deeper Yes
By Coert Visser
William Ury is the co-author of the well-known book Getting to YES. In this book he explains how he has come to realize that getting to yes is only half of the picture. Ury even says that "whether and how we say No determines the very quality of our lives." The reason is that word No is indispensible whenever you have to stand up for what really matters to you.Certain situations can create tension between an issue which is important to you and a relatinoship that is also important to you. This tension can make us fall into the three-A trap of Accomodation (saying yes when we mean No), Attacking (responding forcefully) and Avoiding (doing nothing at all). Ury presents the positive No as a way out. In short this means:

1. Yes! -> positively and concretely describing your core interests and values

2. No. -> explicitely link your no to this YES!

3. Yes? -> suggest another positive outcome or agreement to the other person

Ury goes into much detail about how to prepare, deliver, and follow through your positive No. His style of wrting is crystal clear and his examples are interesting. Some examples are probably very recognizable to many readers (like: how do you say to someone who wants to borrow money from you when you don't want to). Other examples are much grander (how to negotiate in an inter-ethnic conflict) and also interesting. The core idea of this book is very simple and very important. I was perhaps most interested to read Chapter 2 which explain the importance of a Plan B, which is your backup for your prefered outcome. I'll end this review with a quote by the great No-sayer Mahatma Gandhi (which is mentiond on page 7): "A `No' uttered from deepest conviction is better and greater than a `Yes' merely uttered to please or what is worse, to avoid trouble.

Saying no in a positive way
By M. L Lamendola
The title isn't a cute play on words. This book really does reveal how to say "no" in a positive way. Some people think saying no is negative behavior, without recognizing the reality that failing to saying no (when you should) can do immense harm. Some people think that getting your way ("winning") is what matters, and they render their "no" in a way that diminishes their own position and everyone involved.

The first view is disrespectful to yourself and dishonest toward the other person. The latter is disrespectful to the other person and dishonest toward yourself. Neither view takes into consideration that two parties have their own needs and agendas to meet. When one side loses, both lose.

A third way, which Ury reveals, is honest and respectful to both parties. Consequently, it leads to a positive outcome for both parties. Sometimes, it's a matter of leaving a door open. You may have worked with someone who quit and came back several times over the course of many years--how did that person manage to say no to your employer and yet leave the door open to being rehired later? A "no" doesn't need to inflict negative results--it can provide positive results. How that happens is the subject of this book, and Ury provides many examples to show how this works.

In fact, one example from this book was a verbatim suggestion given to me by a business associate just last year. In a pre-sale message, we needed to tell a customer no to some features he wanted. I had sent my associate my planned reply, and she came back with a suggestion--it was a softener to the no, one that left the door open without tying us down. The customer was delighted with my modified reply, and I closed the sale. After the sale, I compared both replies and saw that my original, while not patently offensive, didn't leave the door open and could easily have left the customer feeling cold.

Recognizing these kinds of gems in this book helped reinforce to me the credibility of the author. Yes, he already came with plenty of high-end credentials, as a quick online search on "William Ury" reveals. But what really grabbed me was the substance of the book. Here's a subject we all have to deal with, on various levels, but we find it so hard and so frustrating to get it right. We find ourselves constantly choosing between saying yes to have harmony and saying no to protect our interests. But we don't need to be in that position. It's not an either/or choice.

You can say no to someone's (offer, demand, viewpoint, preference, plans) in a way that leaves that other person feeling better for the exchange, and thus enhances the relationship. You can refuse a customer's demands and not lose the sale or watch future sales evaporate. You can tell your spouse no (to that golf outing, new car, cruise) and not start a fight. You can tell your child no to going to (name the place) without getting an argument or temper tantrum in return. You can tell your boss no to yet another (assignment, transfer, trip, seminar) without sinking your career advancement. How you say no allows you to do these things. And that is what Ury addresses from his years of experience in negotiations.

As I read through this book, time and again I found myself nodding, "Yes, that's exactly right." Other times, I found myself thinking, "So, that's how I should have handled (name the circumstance)!" or "I can see how this works better than the way I normally do it."

Many times, I have said no to someone or disagreed with someone, only to be surprised that the other person is offended. I may have said, "This is wrong," but the other person heard, "You are wrong." You can say no to the proposal without saying no to the person. Yury explains how to do this.

It's a powerful skill, and not just in business. For example, have you fought with a friend or family member over something trivial? Or, flipping that around, have you bought into the "go along to get along" concept, only to fume later?

The process of providing another person with a positive no has three stages: preparation, delivery, and follow-through. The book is divided into three Parts, each of which deal with one of these stages. Each Part contains three chapters, bringing the subtotal to nine chapters. The final (tenth, but unnumbered) chapter concludes the book by explaining the marriage of yes and no.

This book is a winner. If you practice its principles, both you and the recipient of your "no" will feel like--and be--winners, too. I must caution you, this book does not provide some simplistic formula or magic words to utter. It takes time to master the concepts and apply them correctly. Ury provides plenty of examples to show that doing so is well worth the effort.
